Joint presentation by CEU-CEFAS and OIDEL at CEU San Pablo University of the report «Trends in Freedom of Education Worldwide»

Madrid (Spain), 11th  June 2025 | At the CEU San Pablo University headquarters in Madrid, the report “Trends in Freedom of Education Worldwide: Analysis of Its Enablers and Its Relation to Social Mobility and Equity” was presented. The study, authored by Gonzalo Sanz-Magallón, a researcher at CEU-CEFAS, is based on the Global Education Freedom Index (FEI 2023), developed by OIDEL, and a thorough review of academic literature on the strong performance of non-state schools in many countries.

The event was opened by the Director of the CEU Foundation, Javier Tello, and the Director of OIDEL, Ignasi Grau, both of whom emphasized the relevance of the report in the context of today’s educational debate.

The report offers a rigorous empirical analysis that reveals significant correlations between educational pluralism and factors such as equity, academic performance, and the efficiency of the education system. As Professor Sanz-Magallón noted, “correlation is not causation, but it is not coincidence either.”

The presentation was followed by a roundtable discussion moderated by José María de Moya, director of Magisterio magazine, with contributions from Alfonso Aguiló (President of CECE) and Luis Centeno (Secretary General of Catholic Schools). Both experts contextualized the report’s findings within the current educational landscape in Spain, sparking a rich debate on the challenges and opportunities of educational pluralism.
