OIDEL calls for State funding of non-governmental education in UN Social Forum

Geneva (Switzerland), 31st October – 1st November 2024

The Social Forum is an annual meeting convened by the Human Rights Council. It is a unique space for open and interactive dialogue between civil society, representatives of Member States, and intergovernmental organizations, on a theme chosen by the Council each year. This year’s focus was on the contribution of financing for development to the advancement of all human rights for all.

OIDEL took the floor to recall the relationship between financing, development, and self-determination. Advocating for freedom of education, Josyane Zingg, representing OIDEL, showed how public funding for non-governmental education is necessary to grant the self-determination of people, especially minorities. According to the UN Declaration on the Right to Development, the right to self-determination is implied in the right to development. In terms of the right to education, the right to self-determination is expressed in the freedom of education. Therefore, if States are committed to financing for development, they should also be committed to financing for education pluralism.
