Intersessional meeting for dialogue and cooperation on Human Rights and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
OIDEL has participated in the Intersessional meeting for dialogue and cooperation on Human Rights and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that took place online on January 18th, 2022. The meeting was organized around three main themes: investing in sustainable recovery, advancing gender equality, and strengthening partnerships. The aim of the meeting was to “Highlight good practices and discuss recommendations for […] human rights-based recovery efforts from the COVID-19 pandemic.” Therefore, many countries have shared their experience and challenges.
Among the main speakers, there were Prime Minister of Peru, M. Mirtha Vásquez, Mr. Federico Villegas, Ambassador of the Permanent Mission of Argentina and President of the Human Rights Council and Ms. Nada Al-Nashif, United Nations Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights. Most of the interventions highlighted that the pandemic has exploited already existing inequalities. Therefore, States must take special care of those historically marginalised or vulnerable, such as women, indigenous groups or children.
Regarding children and their right to education, different states and civil society organizations have testified to the fact that the burden of closed schools, due to the pandemic, mostly fell on the shoulders of mothers.
OIDEL has participated in this debate recalling that parents have emerged, once again, as solid actors to grant the education of most children. We, therefore, encouraged the international community to take a common good approach for the realization for the right to education and to build a framework in which parents can exercise their choices and make their voice heard. State, teachers, parents and communities have to be able to work together in the attempt to protect children and “Build a better future for all, with human rights at its heart”.
