Together with the Permanent Missions of Chile, Argentina and Paraguay, OIDEL co-sponsored a side event on the margins of the 62nd Session of the Human Rights Council entitled “Education Systems Advancing the Aims of Education under the CRC Optional Protocol.” The event was held in preparation for the next round of negotiations on the draft Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, scheduled for September.
The discussion brought together Felipe Kipreos, Director of the Human Rights Division at Chile’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ashley Berner, Professor at Johns Hopkins University; Alexandre Moreira, Secretary General of the European Education Law Association; and Carlos Horacio Torrendell, Secretary of Education of the Republic of Argentina.
The speakers explored how education systems can contribute to advancing the right to education under the future Optional Protocol, emphasizing the need for stronger legal and policy frameworks that guarantee pluralistic and high-quality education. They also examined current challenges, including the need for a human rights framework on educational pluralism and the importance of aligning national policies with international human rights standards.
The Permanent Missions of Chile, Argentina and Paraguay together with OIDEL, reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing the right to education and to continuing their collaboration within the United Nations to support the development of the Optional Protocol and promote the right to education inside the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
