Valladolid, 2 October 2026
International evidence, educational assessment and the future of educational supervision were at the centre of the 26th International Meeting of Educational Inspection, held in Valladolid from 30 September to 2 October under the theme “Supervision and Assessment for an Education System in Transformation”, with OIDEL participating as a partner organisation.
The opening keynote was delivered by Nuno Crato, Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Lisbon and former Minister of Education and Science of Portugal, who addressed the lessons that can be drawn from international assessments such as PISA and TIMSS. Crato stressed the importance of a structured, progressive and demanding curriculum, as well as access to high-quality educational materials, in fostering learning.
He also examined the impact of artificial intelligence, warning of the risk of excessive outsourcing of cognitive processes, while at the same time highlighting its potential to help teachers identify learning difficulties.
The meeting also brought together experts and educational inspection officials to discuss the use of data and artificial intelligence in supervision, the assessment of education systems, and the role of inspection in supporting improvement. The closing session featured Tanja Vujičić, PISA Project Manager at the OECD, and Andreas Schleicher, Director for Education at the OECD.
For OIDEL, the debate on educational evidence should go hand in hand with reflection on freedom of education and educational pluralism.
